Registration will open May 20th for the 2019 Satilla River Raft Race, but you can go ahead and start your floating creation now. There is no reason to wait. 

 

Registration is $15 per raft, canoe, or kayak. There is no additional fee for crew members.

 

You will be able to signup and pay online using the online signup links below when registration opens. You and your crew will still have to sign the liabilty form on the day of the event. You can print it out ahead of time or obtain a copy from the sign-in booth at the launch site.

 

You can also register and pay in person at the Brantley County Parks & Recreation Office.

Race Rules

The Brantley County Parks & Recreation Satilla River Raft Race is a family-oriented event. Participants are encouraged to act responsibly, show good sportsmanship, assist other participants if necessary, show respect for the river, and of course have fun! Participants are responsible for knowing and following the race rules for their own safety, the safety of other participants, and to ensure that we will be able to hold this event in the future. Alcohol is not permitted.

Event Date

The race will be held on Saturday July 13, 2019. In the event inclement weather prevents safe rafting conditions, the race will be rescheduled for Saturday July 20, 2019.

 

Starting Time

The race will begin at 10AM. Launch information will be provided to all captains by phone or email after the registration deadline has closed.

 

Registration Fees

The cost of registration is $15 per raft, canoe, or kayak. There is no additional registration fee for crew members.

 

Registration Deadline

All entrants must be registered by 5pm Monday July 1st , 2019.

 

The Course

The race course is approximately 3.25 miles long. It begins at Warner's Landing and ends at Ave Strickland Lightsey Park next to the Highway 82 bridges in Atkinson. Safety boats and personnel will be located along the course.

 

Race Classes

There will be three race classes. Class 1 will consist of homemade rafts & decorated manufactured rafts, boats, or floats. Class 2 will consist of kayaks & Canoes.

 

Competition Awards

Class 1 will compete based on creativity. Grand prize for first place will be $500 and a championship trophy, 2nd and 3rd place will receive trophies. Class 2 will compete in a race, first to finish wins $100 and a championship trophy, 2nd and 3rd place will receive trophies.

 

Race Duration

We estimate the average completion time for rafts will be 2-3 hours and Kayaks or canoes will be 1 – 1.5 hours.

 

 

Ages

All ages are welcome to participate but each raft must have a captain at least 16 years of age or older. Those under 16 wishing to compete in the canoe and kayak class are required to be accompanied on the water by someone at least 16 years old.

 

 

Waivers of Liability

All participants or guardians are required to sign a liability waiver prior to launching. Participation is at your own risk.

 

Raft Construction

All materials must be environmentally safe, river friendly, and affixed in a manner to ensure they will not be lost during the race.

 

Raft Size

Your raft can be any size you wish but due to the anticipated shallow river depth at the time of the race, you are encouraged to make a design that can be physically carried to the water for launch and can also float or be pulled across low water spots.

 

Propulsion

Rafts can be propelled by any means that uses human-power. Motors are not allowed.

 

Raft Crew

There are no restrictions to the amount of crew members.

 

Required Equipment

The following equipment is required of every raft, canoe, or kayak: A US Coast Guard approved personal flotation device in possession of each crew member which should be worn at all times.

 

Raft Removal

All rafts are required to be removed from the river at the completion of the course and staged for pick up in the designated loading zone. Removal of derelict rafts is the responsibility of the registered participant.
